| Event - In the late 70s I was living in Munich, Bavaria. Late one dark winter's afternoon, I was driving along one of the main streets, Leopoldstrasse, on my way home. It was absolutely chucking it down with rain, and the traffic was moving slowly in both directions because of the conditions. I was listening to AFN, the American Forces Network, and one of my favourite DJs was telling a particularly funny story. He came to a hilarious part of the story and I was laughing so hard I could hardly keep the car on the road. As I laughed, I looked over and saw a woman in the central reservation with her broken down car, looking soaked and absolutely miserable. Before I knew what I had done, the traffic moved on and I drove past her, still laughing as I caught eye contact with her. It was too late. I was well past before I realised that she must have thought I was laughing at her predicament with (sorry for the word) schadenfreude. |
| Apology - I have often remembered this incident with shame, wishing I had somehow found my way back to you to explain and apologise. To the lady who thought I had laughed at her downfall: I am sincerely sorry for what I appeared to do to you. Please forgive me if you read this all these years later. |
