| Event - In the summer of 1972, between my fourth and fifth grades, we moved to a new neighborhood. When school started, I was the "new kid" and didn't know anyone. One student who was friendly to me was "Pam". We got along fine until the other kids started asking me, "YOU like PAM?" It turns out she was the class pariah. I was so afraid of being ostracised by the others that I "proved" my being "normal" by becoming Pam's worst nightmare, never missing a chance to torment her. I later heard that in eighth grade she ran away from home, and had a child at age 15. |
| Apology - Pam, I have felt nothing but shame for the way I treated you. It probably doesn't make you feel any better, but you made me a better person. Since then, I have never forsaken a friend because they were unpopular, and I pretty much stopped caring about what others thought about me. |
