Son's Screenplay

| Event - My 15-year-old son decided he wants to write screenplays and wanted me to read one he wrote, since I have some writing background. I told him I would read it in private, but he insisted I read it in front of him so he could see me being "blown away" by his talent. Ummm, I was less than blown away. I'm not an actor and I couldn't hide that fact. I tried giving him constructive advice, but he pretty much just tossed the screenplay into the trash. |
| Apology - I think I should have just lied a bit. He's 15 and has room to grow and build his talent. I think I should have pointed out more good things about his writing. |

Do you honestly think your son would have been better served if you had told him how great it was, when it wasn't? We spend way too much effort on protecting the self-esteem of kids instead of teaching them how to learn from mistakes and become better. You can see it every season on the "American Idol" auditions, where people who have been told all their lives what wonderful singers they are and get crushed because they can't carry a tune in a bucket. |

What a beautiful gift that son chose you to read his work. (No need to lie about that.) My guess is that your son revealed his emotions in the writing. Maybe he felt his feelings weren't important - as he wanted them to be reflected in your face. I hope this makes some sense. I also hope it's not too late rescue his screenplay/self-esteem from the trash. Moms approval is all he needs. Then again, is it possible that he tried to 'tell' you something about himself that you missed in the first read. Reopen dialogue. Your son loves his mom. |
